Are
you able to sponsor a walker or do a sponsored walk yourself in aid of
the Harrogate & District Society for the Blind.
Date: Sunday 16th May 2010 on the Nidderdale Walk. Further

POTTERY
TUTOR
This is
a part time position (2 hours per week for 30 weeks per annum term time
only). The successful applicant must be an imaginative experienced
pottery tutor preferably with some experience of teaching people with
disabilities. References and CRB checks will be required.

The
Visual Impairment Centre is open Monday 1.00 - 4.00pm, and Tuesday to
Friday 10.00am to 4.00pm for people suffering severe sight problems. We
are a source of help, support and advice.
Occupational
Classes (30 weeks from September to May - formal enrolment necessary):
- Craft (2 sessions) - A variety of crafts
can be learned for example:-
Learn how to make stools strung with cord; Learn
the art of basketry making such things as trays, baskets, teapot stands
etc;
- Chair Seating
- Learn the intricate skills of re-seating chairs in cane or rush.
- Creative Textiles
- Working with textiles in imaginative ways for instance: Learn
the art of making a rag rug; or perhaps
you would like to create a tactile picture.
- Movement to Music -It's always good to stay
as mobile and active as possible and here is an opportunity to keep
in trim and stay fit. Our Tutor specializes in exercises that
help to prevent osteoporosis.
- Pottery - A class where you can let your
artistic nature run riot!! Enjoy your
artistic talents by producing a wide range of hand made pots and ornaments.
- Creative Needlework
- Yes, you can still sew! Our tutor will guideyou through to making
whatever you wish. Create your own ideas or tap into our tutor's
wealth of knowledge and be prepared to be surprised at what you can
achieve!
- Woolcraft - Once a 'knitter' always a 'knitter'!!It
is still possible when your sight deteriorates and first class garments
are the result, such as tea cosies, cardigans, waistcoats and children's
garments. Or perhaps you feel knitting is now too much for you
and would like to try your hand at weaving, finger knitting or you may
have another idea of working with wool.
- Papercraft - Did you ever wonder
how paper is made? This classs is the art of papercraft from making
your very own paper to producing any type of paper produce including
greeting cards. The one thing to count on is that the finished
product will be unique to you!
- Spinning and Weaving - An ancient
art that is fascinating to learn. Spinning with sheep's wool and
learning how to weave with little or no sight - it is possible!
- Keyboard Skills - The opportunity to learn
touch typing. Typewriters are available on loan and tapes are supplied
to take home. Regular support meetings are held to give an opportunity
to discuss progress.
- Computer Course
-15 week courses available with 1:1 tuition for either beginners or
people wishing to improve their IT skills.
Social
Activities
- Bowling - indoor
bowls during the winter months and outdoor bowls at Wayside Bowling
Club during the summer (weather permitting!)
- Dominoes - A very
keen game to be enjoyed any Monday afternoon
- Ladies Coffee Morning
- A friendly get together for a chat in good company.
- Gents' Coffee Morning
- The gentlemen enjoy putting the world to rights most Tuesday mornings!
- Friday Afternoon 'Get Together'
- A large group which meets Friday afternoon to welcome a speaker or
enjoy a musical entertainment of some sort. A wide range of topics are
covered.
- Ripon Club - there
is an active club which meets at Lister House in Ripon each Tuesday
morning and offers a friendly chat over a cup of coffee followed by
a peaker or musical entertainment.
- Pateley Bridge Club
- meeting the first Wednesday each month at Pateley Memorial Hall. The
group enjoy a speaker or musical entertainment as well as the opportunity
to catch up with each other.
- Walking Group - people interested in walking
can join our monthly walks and annual week of daily walks. Volunteers
offer one to one guiding.
- Annual Party -
held in Harrogate in March/April
- Day Trips - we
arrange halfday trips to various destinations thanks to the generosity
of Belmont Grosvenor School who loan us their minibus during the summer
months.
- Swimming at the Hydro Swimming
Pool - a weekly event each Thursday. The pool is used at this
time exclusively for disabled people and is an ideal opportunity to
practise your swimming techniques in safety. You will require
1:1 supervision and if your don't have anyone to accompany, we may be
able to arrange a companion for you.
- Evening Meetings for Younger People
- Meetings for our younger members are held on a
monthly basis at varying venues in both Harrogate and Ripon
Other activities,
such as trips to the theatre, are organised on an ad hoc basis.
We are entirely
dependant on donations and our wonderful team of volunteers to carry out
the activities shown above. We are constantly in the debt of those who
give so generously in so many ways.
